About Me

Hi, I’m Brandy. I live in Vancouver, Canada but am on a two month vacation-from-winter in Mexico. I will be writing about distance education while experiencing distance education!

As soon as I took my first class at University I knew I wanted to be an instructor. I was always the student helping my fellow classmates or looking up additional information when the instructor wasn’t clear.

My accounting background: My undergraduate degree (in accounting) is from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, my master’s degree (also in accounting) is from the University of Saskatchewan, and my accounting designation is from British Columbia. After taking my first accounting class I started doing the bookkeeping and financial statements for a group of eight start-up companies. By my fourth year of university I was managing the accounting department for a registered charity. I articled at Ernst & Young in Vancouver for my Chartered Accountant designation and moved to a mid-sized firm (Smythe LLP). I spent one very tiring semester working full time at the accounting firm and teaching two accounting classes at Douglas College. Going into busy season, I had to decide whether to work at the firm or teach full-time. There wasn’t much of a decision!

What I’m currently working on: The best teachers are perpetual students, right?! I’m currently working on the Provincial Instructors Diploma Program at Vancouver Community College. I love learning about the psychology of learning. I also enjoy the collaborative nature of this program – the students are encouraged to share insights and resources so we are learning as much from each other as we do from the instructors.

My other ongoing project is to improve the accounting videos on my Youtube Channel. I speak quite quickly so I have online tutorials for most intro topics in accounting so students can pause and replay the video in case they missed something. I also teach a flipped version of the intro class – in this class my students have the ability to learn the material by watching videos, reading the text, using the online notes available or a combination of these options.

Outside of work and school: I’m the mother to a wonderful little boy who keeps me very busy. My goal is to stay active by doing yoga everyday but sometimes chasing after a toddler is enough! During my non-teaching semester (the winter semester) we like to escape chilly Canada and visit beaches and palm trees. I’m currently enjoying the sunshine in Mexico.
